The guide said that they were busted for feeding the warthogs sweet potatoes because they got fat. Up Close and Personal tour - pay $275 to feed five animals in one hour: warthogs, porcupines, bird, giraffes, and hyenas. Given the price of the room, I expected better - for example: there could have been a citronella candle or insect repellant coil around the table and chairs on the deck because there were so many bugs attracted to the lamp at night. Even though a two-bed tent could accommodate four people, you pay extra if you have a 3rd or 4th person who might be a child. I reserved a room and said that my cousin was also booking a room they placed us as far from each other as possible. There is no mention of conservation or a breeding program so it is appears to be for profit only - hence the Tiger King reference. The facility may have acres, but so many animals are crammed into very small cages so it is basically a drive-thru zoo and NOTHING like an African safari at all. Safari West could be renamed Tiger King West in that the animals seem miserable, pacing back and forth in over-filled enclosures. I titled this review after Tiger King, but it is NOT because of personnel drama. Maybe set up a guide buddy system- send two guides out in a vehicle to help with gates and help guides who struggle to walk or have a disorder that could impair their driving. Guide help- our guide was clearly passionate and knowledgeable, but he clearly needed help to succeed with his job. Storage pouches on the safari vehicles (someone on our group lost a wallet) and seatbelts in all rows, not just the top, would also be helpful.Ĥ. Our guide also had a twitching disorder and we were worried that we were going to go off a cliff. You have hundreds of acres and could give them more space.ģ, Vehicle safety- we felt a bit uneasy going on steep terrain in the old vehicles. Larger enclosures- some of the animals seemed confined and stressed in very small areas, especially the birds and monkeys. Automatic gates- Our poor guide with a cane had to get out and close multiple double gates on foot, we felt awful and wanted to help.Ģ. Sitting on top of the vehicle was great and offered excellent views.ġ. The driving tour itself was enjoyable, we saw a lot of animals and our guide was passionate about educating the group. We needed to change our day and time last minute and the reservations staff was very accommodating. We recently visited Safari West for their regular group safari.
